Building a home for your canvas tent is an exciting step, but before you rush to the hardware store, let’s talk reality. In most cases, the lumber alone can cost four times the amount of the tent itself.
Because of this, we always recommend testing your tent on your property in different spots before locking yourself in permanently by building a platform. You might find that your favorite view, or the spot with the best natural drainage, is a few yards away from where you initially planned.
The Low-Cost Alternative: Pea Gravel
If you want a designated, leveled setup spot that looks clean and handles weather well, pea gravel is an excellent choice. It provides a stable base and, more importantly, it offers superior drainage compared to solid wood decking.
Remember, glamping is about comfort, and most guests are using area rugs, elevated bed frames, and furniture inside, so you aren't actually sleeping "on the ground" anyway. A well-placed gravel pad provides a professional finish without the massive capital expenditure of a full deck.

If You Still Choose to Build a Platform
We understand that many glampers and business operators prefer the aesthetic and "lift" of a traditional wooden platform. If you decide to go that route, the most critical engineering factor isn't the decking; it's the guyline tension.
The Golden Rule of Platform Tents: You must ensure that your guylines can be staked down lower than the tent base. When you build a platform, your tent is raised off the ground. If you try to stake your guylines directly into the platform edge, you lose the downward angle necessary for stability. You need your lines to extend past the platform edge to create both outward AND downward pressure. This specific tension is what keeps the canvas taut, allows rainwater to shed efficiently, and prevents dangerous pooling on your roof.

Pro-Tip for Success
Don't rush the build. Spend a full season testing your site. Once you are certain of your location, you can invest in a platform design that complements your landscape.
