Frequently Asked Questions About Wall Tents
Canvas Wall Tent Buyer's Guide
Setup & Performance
Stout canvas wall tents are available in three versatile size options, each engineered to balance a manageable footprint with optimal vertical headroom:
Traditional Open-Floor Options: Designed for outfitters and hunters who prefer bare ground, cots, or custom flooring setups.
- The 7' x 8'10" Wall Tent: A compact, highly portable 62 sq. ft. model featuring a 3'6" wall height and a 6'10" peak height, making it an efficient option for minimalist setups or tighter campsites.
- The 9'6" x 7'6" Wall Tent: A 71 sq. ft. configuration offering a 3' wall height and a 7'1" peak height for an optimal balance of floor space and headroom.
Grounsheet Options: Designed for campers who prefer a completely enclosed setup. The heavy-duty PVC zip-in groundsheet, offering a clean, sealed flooring option while still allowing you to roll up or remove the floor when needed.
- The 12' x 10' Wall Tent: A versatile, highly popular size that balances spacious interior headroom with a robust footprint. Notably, this model includes a heavy-duty PVC zip-in groundsheet, offering a clean, sealed flooring option while still allowing you to roll up or remove the floor when needed.
11 oz. Sunforger Army Duck Canvas: Every Stout wall tent is built using premium 11 oz. Sunforger Army Duck canvas—a gold-standard, double-weave cotton fabric. It delivers exceptional breathability to prevent interior condensation while providing elite-tier water repellency and built-in resistance to mold and mildew.
Galvanized Steel Frame: Unlike flimsy aluminum or wooden poles, our wall tents utilize a heavy-duty, corrosion-resistant galvanized steel frame. This robust skeleton is engineered to withstand high winds, heavy snow loads, and rugged, multi-season basecamp use without bending or buckling.
Heavy-Duty Hardware: Reinforced corners, heavy-gauge zippers, and robust guy-line anchor points ensure long-term structural integrity in remote wilderness environments.
Yes! Every Stout canvas wall tent comes standard with a built-in, adjustable stove jack, ensuring you are fully prepared for winter camping right out of the box.
- Identical Specs to Our Bell Tents: Just like our bell tent line, our wall tent stove jacks feature durable, heat-resistant fiberglass and silicone inserts designed to safely accommodate stove pipes while protecting the 11 oz. Sunforger canvas from high temperatures.
- Cold-Weather Ready: Whether you are running a wood-burning tent stove during late-season hunting trips or extended mountain basecamps, your wall tent is engineered for safe and reliable stove integration.
Product Sizing & Selection
Wind & Snow Resistance: The combination of the rigid galvanized steel framework and the taut, heavy-duty 11 oz. Sunforger canvas allows wall tents to stand firm against high mountain winds and shedding snow loads.
Integrated Stove Jacks: Built with pre-installed, heat-resistant stove jacks so you can safely run a wood-burning tent stove during freezing winter hunting trips or extended late-season camping.
Headroom & Livability: The steep pitch and vertical side walls provide maximum usable interior volume, making it easy to set up tables, stoves, cots, and gear without feeling cramped.
Materials & Safety
Our Stout canvas tents are treated to be mold- and mildew-resistant, waterproof, and—compliant with CPAI-84 fire-retardant standards. We understand some customers have chemical sensitivities, so here is a complete breakdown of our materials and treatments:
Chemical Sensitivity & Groundsheet: In 10 years of manufacturing, we have never received a complaint from a chemically sensitive individual regarding our canvas. The strongest initial odor often comes from the PVC groundsheet rather than the canvas; for sensitive folks, we recommend letting the groundsheet air out for a few days before use.
Waterproofing: Waterproofed prior to cutting using a proprietary formula featuring fluorine-based polyacrylate compounds. This odorless treatment makes water bead and run off, lasting 1–2 years of constant use before reproofing is needed (Rule of thumb: when your nylon ropes begin to fray from sun exposure, it's time to reproof).
Mold & Mildew Protection: Treated with a proprietary, fluorine-free macromolecular compound before cutting, protecting against the top 500 strains of mold in North America. If mold ever occurs, reach out to us at info@stouttent.com for cleaning guidelines.
Fire Retardant (Pro & Overland Series): Tested and compliant with U.S. and European hazardous chemical regulations—including Alkanes C₁₀-C₁₃ (SCCPs), Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD), and Pentachlorophenol (PCP). Certified under CPAI-84 fireproofing standards, making them approved for U.S. National Parks.
What We Don't Use: We do not use PU (polyurethane) coatings, as they destroy canvas breathability. Additionally, our PVC blend floor can be completely unzipped and removed if preferred.
Still unsure? We offer the longest return policy on the market so you can try it risk-free, and we are happy to mail you samples of our different canvas types upon request!
Yes. Just like bell tents, seasoning (or weathering) is essential for your wall tent. Because heavy-duty cotton canvas is stitched with industrial thread, the initial needle holes require a seasoning cycle.
How to Season: Pitch the tent completely, then thoroughly soak the exterior canvas using a garden hose or let it experience a natural rain cycle. The cotton fibers will swell and naturally lock those tiny pinholes shut.
Drying Note: Always ensure the canvas is completely bone dry before packing it down into storage to prevent mildew growth.
