About Stout Tent & Brand Quality
Stout Tent stands apart in the canvas tent industry through a relentless commitment to heavy-duty craftsmanship, premium material selection, and structural innovation designed for long-term durability.
- Superior Grade Materials: We use high-grade, 100% Sunforger cotton canvas treated to be water-, mold-, and UV-resistant, ensuring optimal breathability without sacrificing weather protection.
- Reinforced Engineering: Every tent features robust double-stitched seams, heavy-duty galvanized steel poles, and upgraded guy lines built to withstand demanding outdoor elements.
- Thoughtful Design & Features: From integrated heavy-duty groundsheet options to pre-installed, high-heat stove jacks and extra-tall walls, our tents maximize usable interior space and year-round functionality.
- Rigorous Field Testing: We set up thousands of these tents for large-scale events every year, giving us the unique opportunity to stress-test our designs across diverse climates and high-traffic environments

Absolutely. Many outdoor hospitality businesses, campgrounds, and event rental companies choose Stout Tent because our 100% cotton canvas tents are engineered for heavy-duty commercial use. Their robust frames and breathable fabrics stand up to constant guest turnover far better than consumer-grade alternatives. (Note: If you are planning a permanent or semi-permanent setup, please review our Long-Term Canvas Tent Setup Guide for important anchoring, maintenance, and structural considerations to ensure maximum longevity).
With proper care, maintenance, and seasonal cleaning, a Stout canvas tent is built to last for many years—often outliving synthetic tents by a wide margin. Our use of 100% Sunforger cotton canvas resists UV degradation and natural weathering, ensuring your tent remains a reliable long-term investment for camping, glamping, or commercial outdoor operations. To maximize your tent's lifespan during extended stays, check out our Long-Term Canvas Tent Setup Guide. For ongoing care best practices, visit our Canvas Tent Maintenance Guide.
Product & Sizing Selection
Yes. Unlike lightweight nylon or polyester tents that can flap violently or fail in severe weather, all of our tents are made with sturdy canvas and frames that stand up well to high winds. Our bell tents achieve the highest wind rating performance (45 MPH) because of their timeless conical shape. If you are very concerned about wind, you will want to go with a single-door bell tent that is small to medium in size (4M or 5M).
Our most durable of all the tents is our single-door 5M Overland Sunforger tent that is made with 11 oz Army Duck canvas. For a complete breakdown of every model's specifications, check out our Choosing the Right Tent guide. Once seasoned, the tight weave of the cotton canvas also naturally sheds heavy rain without leaking.
Absolutely. Our Wall tents Pro-series tents, including the Pro 4M, Pro 5M, and Pro 6M, as well as The Overland Sunforger, come equipped with a built-in, adjustable stove jack (3 to 6 inches) so you can safely run a tent wood burner during colder camping trips.
(Note: Ultimate Series Bell tents do not feature a pre-installed stove jack).
Stove Jack & Safety Design: Our stove jacks feature durable, heat-resistant fiberglass/silicone inserts designed to safely accommodate stove pipes while keeping your canvas protected from high temperatures.
Check out our Wood Burning Stove Guide for more details on how to safely and effectively heat your canvas tent.
Seasoning (also called weathering) is the essential process of making your canvas tent fully waterproof before your first camping trip. Because canvas tents are sewn with heavy-duty thread, the needle holes left behind can initially allow water to pass through.
When you wet the canvas for the first time, the 100% cotton fibers swell and expand, naturally sealing those tiny pinholes shut.
- How to season your tent: Pitch your tent completely, then thoroughly soak the canvas using a garden hose or let it experience a natural rain shower.
- Crucial step: Always allow the tent to dry completely before packing it away to prevent mildew growth.
Once seasoned, your tent will be fully sealed and ready for heavy rain. For complete instructions, check out The Ultimate Guide to Canvas Tent Waterproofing, Seasoning and Preventing Leaks.

Materials & Safety
Our Stout canvas tents are treated to be mold- and mildew-resistant, waterproof, and—in our Pro and Overland series—compliant with CPAI-84 fire-retardant standards. We understand some customers have chemical sensitivities, so here is a complete breakdown of our materials and treatments:
- Chemical Sensitivity & Groundsheet: In 10 years of manufacturing, we have never received a complaint from a chemically sensitive individual regarding our canvas. The strongest initial odor often comes from the PVC groundsheet rather than the canvas; for sensitive folks, we recommend letting the groundsheet air out for a few days before use.
- Waterproofing: Waterproofed prior to cutting using a proprietary formula featuring fluorine-based polyacrylate compounds. This odorless treatment makes water bead and run off, lasting 1–2 years of constant use before reproofing is needed (Rule of thumb: when your nylon ropes begin to fray from sun exposure, it's time to reproof).
- Mold & Mildew Protection: Treated with a proprietary, fluorine-free macromolecular compound before cutting, protecting against the top 500 strains of mold in North America. If mold ever occurs, reach out to us at info@stouttent.com for cleaning guidelines.
- Fire Retardant (Pro & Overland Series): Tested and compliant with U.S. and European hazardous chemical regulations—including Alkanes C₁₀-C₁₃ (SCCPs), Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD), and Pentachlorophenol (PCP). Certified under CPAI-84 fireproofing standards, making them approved for U.S. National Parks.
- What We Don't Use: We do not use PU (polyurethane) coatings, as they destroy canvas breathability. Additionally, our PVC blend floor can be completely unzipped and removed if preferred.
