Stout Tent Frequently Asked Questions
Winter Camping
Yes! Many winter campers prefer a groundsheet-free setup because it gives them more flexibility and better performance in cold conditions. Going floorless offers several key technical advantages:
- Safer stove placement: Without a groundsheet, your wood-burning tent stove can sit directly on soil or packed snow, allowing heat to dissipate naturally and reducing the risk of melting or damaging the floor.
- Better interior engineering: A floorless setup lets campers level or pack snow, dig a cold-air trench, or create a subfloor for insulation and drainage, significantly improving overall heat retention.
- More secure anchoring: Our durable tents use elastic bungees along the bottom edge instead of fixed grommets. This allows for the use of larger or irregular stakes (which are common in frozen ground), provides shock absorption to prevent stress tears when high winds load the canvas, and maintains consistent tension as snow settles or the ground shifts.
Ultimately, running your tent with stove without a groundsheet gives you more control, enhanced safety, and better long-term durability in harsh winter conditions.
Our Pro Series and Overland Sunforger Bell tents as well as our Wall Tents come equipped with integrated, fireproof stove jacks specifically designed to accommodate wood-burning stoves safely when installed with proper chimney clearances. Read through our Wood-Burning Stove guide to learn more about safely heating your canvas tent.
Wall tents feature rigid internal frames that provide exceptional load-bearing strength. For bell tents, the steep conical pitch helps shed light snow, but you should actively brush off heavy or wet accumulation to protect the canvas structure. Our Snow Load guide offers helpful guidance and clear expectations on how your tent will handle snow accumulation.

Materials & Safety
Our Stout canvas tents are treated to be mold- and mildew-resistant, waterproof, and—in our Pro and Overland series—compliant with CPAI-84 fire-retardant standards. We understand some customers have chemical sensitivities, so here is a complete breakdown of our materials and treatments:
- Chemical Sensitivity & Groundsheet: In 10 years of manufacturing, we have never received a complaint from a chemically sensitive individual regarding our canvas. The strongest initial odor often comes from the PVC groundsheet rather than the canvas; for sensitive folks, we recommend letting the groundsheet air out for a few days before use.
- Waterproofing: Waterproofed prior to cutting using a proprietary formula featuring fluorine-based polyacrylate compounds. This odorless treatment makes water bead and run off, lasting 1–2 years of constant use before reproofing is needed (Rule of thumb: when your nylon ropes begin to fray from sun exposure, it's time to reproof).
- Mold & Mildew Protection: Treated with a proprietary, fluorine-free macromolecular compound before cutting, protecting against the top 500 strains of mold in North America. If mold ever occurs, reach out to us at info@stouttent.com for cleaning guidelines.
- Fire Retardant (Pro & Overland Series): Tested and compliant with U.S. and European hazardous chemical regulations—including Alkanes C₁₀-C₁₃ (SCCPs), Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD), and Pentachlorophenol (PCP). Certified under CPAI-84 fireproofing standards, making them approved for U.S. National Parks.
- What We Don't Use: We do not use PU (polyurethane) coatings, as they destroy canvas breathability. Additionally, our PVC blend floor can be completely unzipped and removed if preferred.
Still unsure? We offer the longest return policy on the market so you can try it risk-free, and we are happy to mail you samples of our different canvas types upon request!
