Pro Series: Upgrades to a heavier single-weave 10.06 oz / 340 gsm canvas, includes integrated CPAI-84 fire-retardant treatment, built-in adjustable stove jacks, and extra doors or options like the 360-degree skylight on the Stargazer model.
Overland Sunforger Series: Features a heavy-duty 11 oz / 380 gsm double-weave canvas treated with the classic Sunforger finish, offering exceptional long-term weather resistance, built-in stove compatibility, and full CPAI-84 fire-retardant compliance.
Absolutely. All Pro-series tents, including the Pro 4M, Pro 5M, and Pro 6M, as well as The Overland Sunforger, come equipped with a built-in, adjustable stove jack (3 to 6 inches) so you can safely run a tent wood burner during colder camping trips.
(Note: Ultimate Series tents do not feature a pre-installed stove jack).
Stove Jack & Safety Design: Our stove jacks feature durable, heat-resistant fiberglass/silicone inserts designed to safely accommodate stove pipes while keeping your canvas protected from high temperatures.
Seasoning (also called weathering) is the essential process of making your canvas tent fully waterproof before your first camping trip. Because canvas tents are sewn with heavy-duty thread, the needle holes left behind can initially allow water to pass through.
When you wet the canvas for the first time, the 100% cotton fibers swell and expand, naturally sealing those tiny pinholes shut.
- How to season your tent: Pitch your tent completely, then thoroughly soak the canvas using a garden hose or let it experience a natural rain shower.
- Crucial step: Always allow the tent to dry completely before packing it away to prevent mildew growth.
Once seasoned, your tent will be fully sealed and ready for heavy rain. For complete instructions, check out our Seasoning Your Canvas Bell Tent guide.
Setup & Performance
Stout Tent canvas bell tents are engineered for ultimate all-weather performance. Our design completely prevents water accumulation through a multi-layered defense system:
- Wind & Rain Deflection: The aerodynamic conical shape naturally sheds high winds and heavy rainfall off the roof.
- Ground-Level Protection: A high-walled tub-style groundsheet combined with overlapping zippers and weather flaps blocks rising water and pooling.
- Factory-Sealed Canvas: High-end waterproofing treatments seal the 100% cotton canvas fibers against moisture.
- A-Frame Rain Cap: Topped with a custom 2-inch plastic rain cap over the A-frame peg to stop water from trickling down the pole and pooling at the entrance.
Rooted in time-tested durability—dating back to historical 1858 designs refined from traditional tipis—our modern bell tents are built to keep you dry and secure in the harshest elements.
Stout canvas bell tents are designed to handle winter camping and cold-weather environments, but managing snow accumulation is critical to maintaining structural integrity.
- General Winter Performance: The combination of durable 11 oz. Sunforger Army Duck canvas and a robust galvanized steel frame allows bell tents to stand up to cold temperatures and light winter weather. When paired with a compatible wood-burning stove, the interior stays warm and comfortable.
- Snow Load Management: Because canvas tents are flexible structures rather than rigid permanent buildings, heavy or wet snow can accumulate on the roof and cause sagging or structural strain.
- Snow Load Guide Reference: For complete details on weight limits, pitch configurations, and best practices for clearing snow during winter trips, please review the Snow Load Guide.
Materials & Safety
Our Stout canvas tents are treated to be mold- and mildew-resistant, waterproof, and—in our Pro and Overland series—compliant with CPAI-84 fire-retardant standards. We understand some customers have chemical sensitivities, so here is a complete breakdown of our materials and treatments:
- Chemical Sensitivity & Groundsheet: In 10 years of manufacturing, we have never received a complaint from a chemically sensitive individual regarding our canvas. The strongest initial odor often comes from the PVC groundsheet rather than the canvas; for sensitive folks, we recommend letting the groundsheet air out for a few days before use.
- Waterproofing: Waterproofed prior to cutting using a proprietary formula featuring fluorine-based polyacrylate compounds. This odorless treatment makes water bead and run off, lasting 1–2 years of constant use before reproofing is needed (Rule of thumb: when your nylon ropes begin to fray from sun exposure, it's time to reproof).
- Mold & Mildew Protection: Treated with a proprietary, fluorine-free macromolecular compound before cutting, protecting against the top 500 strains of mold in North America. If mold ever occurs, reach out to us at info@stouttent.com for cleaning guidelines.
- Fire Retardant (Pro & Overland Series): Tested and compliant with U.S. and European hazardous chemical regulations—including Alkanes C₁₀-C₁₃ (SCCPs), Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD), and Pentachlorophenol (PCP). Certified under CPAI-84 fireproofing standards, making them approved for U.S. National Parks.
- What We Don't Use: We do not use PU (polyurethane) coatings, as they destroy canvas breathability. Additionally, our PVC blend floor can be completely unzipped and removed if preferred.
Still unsure? We offer the longest return policy on the market so you can try it risk-free, and we are happy to mail you samples of our different canvas types upon request!
